Hmmmm.  Looks like the Ctrl-C signal is being caught in the start up file
and being ignored.  Try logging in as normal user and then 'su root' (NOT
'su - root').  Does that work?

Alternatively, if you BIOS is so configured, boot up with a Linux
installation CD and go into rescue mode.
