The question is not one about whether Joe User can grok and hack the code.
The questions is about whether a user who goes with closed source software
will have the floor knocked off from beneath his feet when the company that
makes the closed source software he totally depends on goes out of business
because of accounting fraud by its CFO. This user has invested lots of
money and efoort into that closed source software. When the maker of the
software is no more, this user is left with a tough decision - start with
another software from scratch. Or continue with an ageing system.

Open source is important not because you or I can hack the code. It is
important because you or I can hire someone to hack the code if the
developer of the software disappears because he has been abducted by aliens.

Really, now. These are all arguments that are widely available in such
fundamental documents as _Cathedral and the Bazaar_. I recommend that
people interested in more than software issues about open source do a bit of
reading first.
