Ok, what are your needs? Please define the application requirements. If
you need very fast writes, no transactions, then mysql is for you. (I
know mysql has transactions, but not fit for a production box yet).
Postgres is a more featured, flexible database.

Pg has excellent Perl support too.

Postgres supports ODBC natively (I have pulled data into the staroffice
DB and excel via odbc from a Postgres DB). It also supports JDBC, and if
you like Perl, you can even write your stored procedures in Perl in
Postgres.
