And add to that, postgres jdbc driver is extremely fast. It connects in half 
the time it takes to throw login prompt in telnet. Some bioinformatics guys 
here were thrilled to see their java app actually working twice as fast in 
linux compared to windows..

ODBC is also pretty fast but never benchmarked it.. but jdbc(Which I suspect 
is on top of odbc) is pretty fast... Kicks s**t out of oracle..
