No chance.  They'll only end up building a system that has all the 
loopholes, bugs and api incompatibilities that all mature products have 
already been through in their pre alpha stages.

Again, no way.  If they want to learn a language, start small, don't
jump straight to a huge project.  They'll learn to write bad code, and
it will be near impossible to clean up when they do figure out their
act.

Besides, the unix philosophy is to do one job and do it well.  You 
should really be building your system from a set of currently existing 
systems with well defined interfaces.
