Its works really, some one please repeat the process on RH 7.2
and 7.3 or any other distro and report, I am mailing this in
response of continues sm56 modem help requests.
Be sure this is not he perfect solution, you have to sacrifice
lot its better to get your self a well supported modem or ask
your modem manufacturer / vendor to provide better support for
Linux platform.
Please read below :
Yes you can use sm56 with RH7.2 or later. The process could be
stated as roll back or core components such as kernel and
related and dependents.
I have successfully done this many times but I do not have it as
a script or documented anyplace with me, you might have to spend
lot of time doing it yourself.
So here we go , you need your RH7.1 or any clone such as PCQ
7.1, Install RH 7.2, or upgrade to 7.2 from 7.1 base.
Next install the kernel package from 7.1 example command is "rpm
-ih --oldpackage kernel.rpm" . In various situations flag
--replacepkg or --replacefiles can be a great help.
There will lot of packages which may not work right to please
spend some time in forcefully de-grading them, read the man page
of RPM, that will help alot. In the end I am sure you'll be too
happy for what you make out of it all.
Also if you care for good hardware support of your modem, kindly
advocate/request a good support from the vendor, that will help
in future.
And guys this might mean war, but PCQ 7.1 sucks to me to so
called as a distro, its no magic, but thanks to them for saving
so much of bandwidth all over country by supplying PCQ 7.1
which is just a tweaked 'anaconda' and all RH7.1.
If you get it done and document the whole process and create a
script can be a great help to spoon feed the mushrooming user
base
of linux with lot of sm56 modems. :)
