If you don't want to recompile the kernel (and use the default installed
kernel) then starting up APM is as easy as loading the APM module and
starting apmd

To do this, in /etc/rc.d/rc.local add the following line

#Load APM module
modprobe apm

#Load the APM daemon
/sbin/apmd


Then save this file
To start APM do the following
. /etc/rc.d/rc.local

(The first '.' is needed)

This should allow you to power down the machine during shutdown.
