I also would like to add,
Postfix is an MTA - free and faster than sendmail ( But less secure)
Exim is an MTA  - free
Communigate is free but evry mail sent through it has an ad on Communigate,
if you dont want that then it costs you $$$$$$$$$

Also try all these MTA's on a spare m/c and after you are completely
confident implement it.
