well, if it is apache, then you simply send it a signal.  apache keeps 
track of the log file size, so if it changes, it won't really know what 
to do.  if you truncate the log file, you'll find that apache continues 
writing from where it left off, and fills the space before with NULLs.  
Not sure if you send it a SIGUSR1 or a SIGHUP, but you can check the 
manual for that, or just check your logrotate file for apache - it does 
the same thing.
