Any Working CD-Rom drive should do.

Actually when you buy a CD-Rom u got to be lucky so that you get a long life
out of it, there are other factors which influence the longevity of your
CR-Rom drives the main factors are you got to have a good power supply with
good earthing as small leakage currents for long periods of time can damage
your HDD CDROM etc, also CD-ROM's should be best used in a parallel to your
desk, I have seen people put CD into the drive tilt the cabinet and read the
CD, this hugely damages the optical reader in the drive.

And coming back to your problem before buying or exchanging from u r dealer
or Bartering fom a friend, try things like,
making your CD-ROM as Secondary Master, interchange your cables and what all
permutations and combinations you can try, bcoz many times you cannot come
to a definite conclusion or isolate the problem, but my guess is your CD-ROM
drive life is coming near to the end, Anyway wish you good luck for u r CD
ROM drive.
