Hi
Sorry the response is so late. Thanks Shridar, it worked.
Philip and Sid, I'm sorry I didn't use the right terminology. what i
wanted was to be able to be able to switch my hard disk to "stand by
mode". I heard about this facility on windows, but personally I don't
use Windows, only linux, so what I was talking of was heresay.
as Shridar had pointed out, on linux using the hdparm command, you can
switch the hard disk to standby mode. this is a power saving feature
when the system is left idle for a certain time interval, similair to
power management feature of the monitor. on reading the man page, it worked.
you require to be logged in as root, and for a 10 min wait period after
which the HDD must go to stand by can be achieved by the command
hdparm -S120 /dev/hda
to get the HDD active will take a few seconds.
