I do it this way. I edit the /etc/inittab file to start the login in
gui. You can also do this through the KDE Control Centre -> boot
manager. You can choose between KDM, GDM or XDM login managers. I prefer
KDM, easily configurable. During login, you can now choose which window
manager you like to start. You can even choose console login if you want
to.

Of course, all this can be done from the console in non GUI mode also,
but as far as I understand, it involves writing some files and deleting
some each time you want to change the WM.

For me, the GUI login works fine. Try it.
