This is because "switchdesk" is a distro  specific software &
unless you reconfigure it, there is no way that it  will know
that icewm has been hand-installed.

Read through the icewm  documentation. Normally  the  default
method of starting any particular WM suggested by XConsortium
is through .xinitrc ...  Probably, modifying the last line of
your .xinitrc and commenting out the call to kde would work.
