Depends on the netblock. They should ideally allocate this. > What goes where ? Should I put my static IP as IP address or as Default > Gateway ? What do I give as Primary nameserver ? Your IP is your IP address. They are supposed to provide you with a default gateway. You probably can get away with no setting for default gateway, but by setting just the gateway device. /sbin/route add -net default dev eth0 > Needless to say, the hathway chaps have said they cannot help me w/ > configuring it under linux. Sue them. :) You can probably argue that they are using their monopoly in the Cable ISP market to promote friendly businesses (MS :-) Get connected using windows, open a command prompt, and run ipconfig /a. Note down everything you get as output (some windows versions also have a winipcfg command too), and use that as your configuration in Linux too. You always can call them up and ask for the default gateway, and the netmask. Don't they provide this info irrespective of your client OS? I mean, if you were on Windows, how would they have configured it?
