he doesn't really have to use subdomains - at least he doesn't have to
tell the world that he does.

Let's look at the most general case:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] sends a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and 
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

user2's mail should be delivered locally - no problem here since he is 
@server1....
user's mail should go through the smart host - no problem since domain 
is different.

user2 should see mail coming from [EMAIL PROTECTED] - this is so 
that replies are sent correctly.
user should see mail coming from [EMAIL PROTECTED], and should see other 
recipient as [EMAIL PROTECTED] - this is so that replies from outside 
are sent to real domains.

This is what needs to be done:

genericstable aliases @server1.domain1.com. to @domain1.com.
esmtp mailer sends all headers through genericstable
local mailer sends no headers through genericstable
