Open your /etc/lilo.conf file and look at the first line[ that is the
line which looks like]

boot=/dev/hda

if the RHS is other than /dev/hda [or hdb or hdc or hdd, depending on
your system conf] that is if there is some number like /dev/hda1 or
/dev/hda3 etc etc, then lilo is not installed on your MBR. Change the
line and remove the number. go therough 

lilo.conf man page for details
