I am trying an alternative to wvdial to connect to the net as a user (on
Debian Woody) - WMPPP.

I have set up 'sudo' as advised by Bish, and 'sudo wvdial' now works
fine. So, I have written a script 'bsnl' containing 'sudo wvdial' and
run it as './bsnl' from a console. This works fine for me.

Now, I want to avoid opening a console for logging in and therefore,
want to use wmppp - It displays a dynamic representation of the load on
the ppp line on a 64x64 miniwindow. It also starts and stops the
connection and displays the time elapsed since it came up. The traffic
on the interface is also monitored.

The README.Debian file with the wmppp says -

wmppp installs /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/00wmppp and /etc/ppp/ip-down.d/00wmppp.
These files are necessary for the proper operation of wmppp. The first
touches /var/run/wmppp.$PPP_IFACE and the other removes it.....

My problem is, as root the above is fine. When run as a user, creation
of the file /var/run/wmppp.$PPP_IFACE is not ppossible because there is
no permission to write to /var/run/

So, how do I run 'wmppp' as a user ?

Any ideas will be helpful.
