I also downgraded the wvidal to that on 
PCQ CD RedHat 7.1 in RedHat 8.0
and the wvdialconf /dev/null is working with out a 
stitch. I mean it is not overwriting /dev/null.

I have all reasons to believe that wvdial 1.53 is having
some sort of bug.  Two problems I found is that it
does not update the /etc/ppp/pap-secrets when the 
username, password is changed in /etc/wvdial.conf
and the problem of overwriting /dev/null.

experts, please check this. I dont want another stray
discussion about what  wvdialconf /dev/null does, because
the documentation says exactly this when the wvdialconf
doesnot detect a modem.
