Hi Sridhar...
As u said problem is with root file system... How can i take backup of the disk.... It is my server m/c... iam new to Linux... pls let me know if i can connect it to a client m/c as slave and get the data... /home is not mounted so i could not see the contents of /home... what to do ???

You have a bad block on the disk. Backup the data and run fsck. If root
partition is corrupted, you might have to reinstall.

If you get to boot, run badblocks and skip those blocks from usage. man
badblocks for more details.
