I have tried starting emacs both within the console and inside X using
emacs -nw. In either case, no syntax highlighting.
However, in X without the -nw switch, I do get syntax highlighting.
(sorry I forgot to mention that before)

In fact I did search there for a suitable .emacs file, and did use
some of them I thought I required, but did not help.
Probably, I need to do some simple thing to get syntax highlighting
working under console mode. But what is that I don't know.
Any suggestions?
