You need to add the following option to your XF86Config file in the 
mouse section:
Option    "ZAxisMapping" "Y"
Refer to the "README.mouse" file that comes with the XFree86

You probably meant that your X session hung. "Ctrl-Alt-Backspace" might 
help in such a situation.
It's not easy to crash linux on a well configured system as a normal 
user.

Check that your entry in the /etc/fstab file has write permissions for 
non-root users. Also, check if the directory that you mount your
