Well...
Taking into consideration the "Newbie", I could
list the foll. advantages:
Direct manipulation of "password" file:
o Learn how to edit files
o Learn perl!
o Know the format of "/etc/passwd" or "/etc/shadow" file
o Using the "crypt" function
o More control over other parameters in "passwd" file
Using shell utilities:
o Learn shell scripting
Uhmm...
The "Newbie" should please note that the direct file manip
should only be taken as an exercise.
Otherwise, Mr. Philips (oops... Philip I mean) has offered
a more engaging solution.
