afaik if you've compiled courier imap (and not specified extra
parameters such as mysql in vpopmail) and are authenticating against
vpopmail's default password files (authvchkpw), then you might want to
checkout authdaemonrc, and have to specify the modules with which you
wish to authenticate. apart from that you will also need the relevant
modules in authlib/ directory (e.g. authdaemond.mysql, authvchkpw)

this of course i'm assuming that you're running your own compiled
version of courier-imap as the imap/pop3 server, while you're doing the
authentication, and also connecting to the correct port.

you may also try to checkout rpm based installs (http://www.rpmfind.net)
 they usually don't give dependency related problems and also do the job
well.
