Looks like your hopes are going to be dashed.
1. Normally soft modems are not working under linux.
2. Some way around have been found but to get there you first need to get on internet 
(catch 22!!) and google as suggested by friendly(??) folks at Stayam
3. Way out is to browse from friends place and see if you can pick up something for 
your particular modem and download driver / files.
Sorry but that is best I can suggest other than get a new modem and power your way to 
internet.
