These winmodems are a big headache under Linux. One of our list
members (Sayamindu  Dasgupta) was  the co-author  of the  HOWTO
page at  The Linux Documentation  Project (http://en.tldp.org).
It is quite detailed. In any case, you would get useful lead in
the references quoted in the LOST snippet below.
