Hi there , I have been facig some wierd problems with my pctel modem.First I was unable use the modem , then I downloaded the drivers from linmodems.org and after that I was able to get it detected by redhat 8.0. Then I got an error saying that module is compiled with gcc 3.0 and this may cause problems.......Now the problem is that I get a " No Carrier " message when I try to connect using kppp. I wrote a script for automating the loading of the modules.........it still gave the "No Carrier " message........but when I load the modules individually by giving the commands.................insmod -f pctel........insmod ptserial..............it connects instantly.I don't understand what is the difference.........may be this problem is specific to my system only........I don't know??????? Tell me what is the problem with the pctel driver.. Linux is such a dynamic OS , if a new software is released today ,a still newer version is available within weeks.......but this problem with pctel modem has taken too long to solve. I don't understand what is the problem , the linux community is such a vast group.........you may say that vendors have not released the technical specifications , but I had problems with my Ac97 Onboard soundcard and via was not ready to release the source for the driver..............but ALSA came to rescue and my soundcard works like a charm!!! It's really amazing !!!...........I don't know how they wrote the drivers. Please tell me if there are any alternative sources of the drivers for my PCTEL MICROMODEM 56 (internal) I am not a programmmer so I don't know the difficulties involved. This is just my opinion.........I do not mean to make anyone angry........but this problem with the modem is making me [EMAIL PROTECTED] suggestions regarding the drivers are welcome.
