Only on my system RH7.3 there was no ifup / ifdown so I did "ifconfig eth1 down/up" as was suggested by Abdul and Suresh. Worked like a charm. And As promised I am on way read more about crontab and have also set up fetchmail on this instead on daemon mode. Relative merits of the daemon vs crontab approach?? Of course the latter gives me flexibility of not polling during off office hours.
