Thanks for adding to my tiny knowledge of Linux again. So now I did
this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] sudev]$ rpm -qf /sbin/if{up,down}
initscripts-6.67-1
initscripts-6.67-1
[EMAIL PROTECTED] sudev]$ cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Linux release 7.3 (Valhalla)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] sudev]$ rpm -qR kernel | grep init
initscripts >= 5.83
mkinitrd >= 3.2.2
[EMAIL PROTECTED] sudev]$ cd /sbin
[EMAIL PROTECTED] sbin]$ ls if*
ifcfg ifconfig ifdown ifenslave ifport ifup ifuser
[EMAIL PROTECTED] sbin]$ /sbin/ifdown eth1
Users cannot control this device.

Then I recollected what I did yesterday to get rudimentary help:

$ man ifdown
No manual entry for ifdown
$ ifdown --help
bash: ifown: command not found
[EMAIL PROTECTED] sbin]$ ifdown
bash: ifdown: command not found

Why?? Stupid of me because I was not "su" and had not given path
/sbin/ifdown!!

$whoami
sudev

Now I get this. As I said Thanks again.
