Well, I understand your point but can't help to be picky here.

Reach of newsgroups or mailing list can be equal. If 50K professionals choose
to subscribe to a mailing list, it would have same sort of reach.

OK. Now let's not start pull v/s push technology debate on this. Both have
their own places.

All I am saying is reason those many people participate on online forum(of any
kind) is because they want to share knowledge/experience. It's the spirit that
is more important than the method of delivery..

Hi Sridhar, Each has its own advantages. But frankly
I don't think 50K professionals could opt to join a
(discussion-based) mailing list, and allow it to
remain working. It would collapse under its own weight!

Actually, I'm a great fan of mailing lists, having been
with Goanet (www.goanet.org) since 1994, and being
inspired to set up a number more here
(see www.indialists.org). But I too decided to go in for
the tedious process of setting up the newsgroup
                soc.culture.indian.goa (moderated) because it has
                certain advantages.

Incidentally, we don't seem to have a single news
server in India, now that news.vsnl.net.in is dead.
                Or am I wrong?

If you want to access news from any Usenet newsgroup,
apply for a free password from news.cis.dfn.de
Or, you could go to the http://groups.google.com which
                has a web interface.

And when I asked about a news server in India, I basically
didn't mean one to mirror the entire set of existing
newsgroups. What I had in mind was one to build up a
*new* set of India-specific newsgroups (which could then
be mirrored by whoever finds these useful). See the
discussion below with a mentor from the Usenet
                volunteers. FN

Goto
http://www.usenet.org.uk for discussion about the uk.*
hierarchy--which I was suggesting as a model.

Many of the people interested in country hierarchies
participate in the newsgroup news.admin.hierarchies
I suggest you read the archives of the group at
http://groups.google.com and subscribe and ask advice
about a proposed india.* hiearchy (there already is
an in.* hierarchy (covering the US state of Indiana).

Anyone can create a new hierarchy, basically it is a long
slow process to persuade news administrators to
carry it. Start with the major ISPs (Internet Service
Providers) and major universities in India, the major
Usenet providers like Supernews.

But in the long run I believe you will be better off
that way. When you just create Big 8 groups you are
limiting yourself to groups which have very strong
support--strong enough to pass the voting requirements.

As I said news.admin.hierarchies is the best place for
advice.
