thanks , how can i know which version of IP is installed on my machine 
secondly when i say ldapsearch why it says cannot contact ldap server

If you have a firewall running, does it allow TCP port 389 (or 636 for
LDAP+SSL)?

Also, this is a documented error for which the OpenLDAP folks said the
following:

    'Most commonly, this occurs when slapd(8) was
    configured to support IPv6 yet the operating system
    kernel wasn't. In such cases, the message can be
    ignored.'
