Yes. If you are using their customized dial-in 
software, then it might be possible that they 
are using additional keywords before or after
the authentication.

I'm just guessing here. :-)

And if you seriously meant that they "advised" 
you not to use Linux, then ditch them (if possible),
and hunt for some other ISP.

You may try your hand at minicom(1).
Using some sniffer software on the Windows m/c
sounds like an interesting adventure. :-)
