I am using JAMD linux (RH based distro stripped to one cd) and i encountered the same problem .Replace the line FontPath "unix/:7100" in your XF86Config file with the following entry FontPath "usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts"

That is because redhat relies on the X Font Server (xfs) service being started.


Instead of doing this, just stopping and starting xfs should have helped.
