did you restart xinetd after you edited your file ?
and how did you telnet to that port ? paste a log of what you get on the
screen.

Sendmail by default will bind it self to the localhost only unless you open
the sendmail.cf file and bind it to all the other remaining ip addresses on
your machine.


Use nmap to scan open ports on your machine.  from your redhat machine try
this

$ nmap localhost  --- this will show you what all ports are open at the
localhost ip. if 110 is open, then pop3 is working.

$nmap <your IP> -- this will show you all those ports open on your specific
ip address. if you dont find 25/tcp  - smtp, then it means, your sendmail is
still not open on this port.
