I tar and backup my /home along with some important files from /etc, like /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, /etc/fstab, /etc/lilo, /etc/sudoers and my work files. > > On the other hand, I have kept /home on a separate partition. If you have more than one user, then, after your installation is over, you must add your users in the same sequence in which you created them in the first place. Else, you will have to give their correct uid later somewhere (/etc/group probably). Now, /home should start working . If you have formatted /home also, you can untar the /home you saved and all will work without any problem. This is my experience with Woody, but other distros may differ.
