OK, more than a cpl of guys helped me out on that, and
thanks a lot for ur help.... I followed everything u
said, and I did manage to get back my Linux.... But,
newer problems arose after that.....

first off, since i just reinstalled GRUB from my HDD,
instead of the CDs, I have Grub 1.5 now, instead of
the earlier GRUB 2.... Dunno if thats any source for
concern.

Secondly, my Linux takes near about 5 mins, for the
GUI, and about 3 mins, for the console now! Syslog
takes a loooong time ot load, and sendmail and
sm-client take the better part of two minutes,
themselves! This never happened earlier, when Linux
was 'uncontaminated' by Win98! I checked the syslog
msgs, and there are a couple of msgs that are repeated
PLENTY of times....

The msgs -
"Nov 1 13:55:37 FALLENANGEL modprobe: modprobe: Can't
locate module block-major-33
Nov 1 13:55:37 FALLENANGEL modprobe: modprobe: Can't
locate module block-major-33
Nov 1 13:55:37 FALLENANGEL modprobe: modprobe: Can't
locate module block-major-34
Nov 1 13:55:37 FALLENANGEL modprobe: modprobe: Can't
locate module block-major-34 "

AND THAT CONTINUES ANOTHER 10 TIMES... and finally
gives....

"
Nov 1 13:55:38 FALLENANGEL kernel: xd: Out of memory.
Nov 1 13:55:38 FALLENANGEL insmod:

Nov 1 13:55:38 FALLENANGEL insmod: Hint: insmod
errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. You may
find more information in syslog or the output from

AND THAT GOES ON FOR ATLEAST ANOTHER 20-30 lines!!!

AFTER all this is done, once the GUI FINALLY loads, it
takes bout 2.5 mins to give me the desktop! After
which, anything I try to open, takes atleast 30-40
seconds after I click on it, to actually open!

I got online, looked around for xd, and found that it
was a module for old XT HDDs.... so, since I wouldnt
be needing it anyway, I just went ahead and deleted
the module itself! This made all the errors go away,
but still, the system itself would take time to
boot... Sendmail still took ages, so I just disabled
it, until I figure it out.... And the GUI still
wouldnt respond.... I thought maybe the HDD params had
got messed up (I still dunno where xd came from!)...
so I edited the harddisks file and enabled DMA and
EIDE modes..... Mine is a brand new 80GB Barracuda
drive, so Im sure both are supported...... Still no
change.... I tried to run XF86Config, and
surprisingly, I couldnt even find the damn thing! Its
not present on my HDD at all! Dunno where that went
off..... Finally, Im just considering reinstalling it
from scratch, because I just dont have enough Linux
knowledge to troubleshoot it so much! If any of u have
seen this problem before, and can help, pls lemme
know..... thanks, Karthik
