Hi, bout ur AMD question.... the story isnt quite as
simple as that..... I had an Athlon Thunderbird 850MHz
a few years back, but had to change the motherboard
about EIGHT times, due to various issues.... and with
the last mobo, the proc itself burnt out (not the
proc's fault, a GREAT technician managed to drop a
screwdriver into my system while it was running, and
buggered it up!) But, I did quit AMD after that and
got me a P4 1.5 GHz...... bout a month back, I decided
to upgrade again, and my new system is a spanking
clean AthlonXP 2600+ with a Biostar M7NCG Pro mobo,
and 512MB of DDR333 RAM....... The new XP line of
processors will not give any more heating problems, as
they all come equipped with a thermal diode, and the
mobos have their own sensors, so that teh performance
is cut down if it heats up (a la Intel .... Thermal
Throttling, its called) ..... But, u must take note
that to get the maximum utilisation of ur Athlon
system, u MUST choose components carefully..... My
mobo (its a Krypton mobo, which is Priya, but the
truth is that its a Biostar mobo, which is just
rebadged here by Priya... so the Priya factor doesnt
enter, if u know how to handle ur system.... Most
Priya boards are rebadged Biostar adn MSI boards.....
) the Biostar M7NCG Pro uses a nVidia nForce2 chipset,
which is UNCONTESTED as far as top chipset for AMD
systems goes..... Trust me... this board comes with an
integrated GeForce4 MX AGP, AND 6-channel REAL TIME
DOLBY DIGITAL sound!!!!! Basically, it can take ur
mp3s, convert them to Dolby, and feed ur Dolby decoder
(if u have one....) ... unfortunately I dont have a DD
reciever, so Im using the analog connections, which is
still 6-channel, and is far superior to any onboard
sound..... It is claimed taht teh Dolby output of this
chipset is superior even to thwe Creative Audigy!!!!
Aside from this, the board also comes with Firewire
AND ethernet..... for bout Rs. 6750!!! Which is
comparable with some of teh Via based mobos out
there....... Do some research, and see if u like
this..... IMO, its a bargain! ut, an MSI board with
similar features will cost u bout Rs. 11,000! Biostar
is the only manufaturer to give it at such a low
price...... AND, after u get it, u need to run certain
patches in Windows98 (since ur using Linux, its no
probs... But, then again, if ur using Linux, u dont
even need the GF4 or the 6-channel sound, which is not
supported by linux!).... and certain other things to
be done for Windows compatibility...... RAM, needs to
match ur processors FSB, since they'll run in sync
then.... and u need to get two DIMMS, so that they run
in 'Dual Channel mode' which is 128-bit..... check the
nVidia site for more details........

GRUB ..... ok, actually my mistake... GRUB loader 1.5,
it said.. GRUB is 0.93 only.... I will check the proc
to see whats hogging..... and 'uncontaminated', I know
its not possible for Windows to touch teh Linux part,
but my Linux ran PERFECTLY well until that day... so,
I kinda like to blame it on Windows.... :-)
