AMD Athlon xp2400+, 256MB DDR (forget SDRAM completely) , ASUS /MSI motherboard, preferably with nVIDIA graphics . Saw an ASUS mobo with SIS chipset recently.Avoid that completely .XFree has no support for the latest SIS stuff. If you are heavily into audio , get an ASUS mobo with the Dolby sound chip . Ihaven't used an MSI mobo but heard good things about it.Chip mag rated it high, but for me It will always be an ASUS mobo. Helped a friend get all of the above long with an ASUS cdwriter, 40GB Seagate barracuda HD and !5" samsung monitor which cost around 25k . He is running win2k, Jamd Linux with Vmware and Slackware .No problems whatsoever .AMD rocks. Good luck .... raghuram. > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "raghuram" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Sent: Saturday, November 15, 2003 8:46 AM > Subject: Re: [LIH]Optimum config. for Linux > > > On Friday 14 Nov 2003 7:32 pm, Franklin wrote: > > > Hello friends, > > > > > > I'm purchasing a new computer in which I would like to dual boot > > > (RH8.0) alongwith Win98. > > > I'm thinking of going for a P4 1.8 G.hz pc with chipset motheboard. > > > Will > > I > > > > have any problems in this? > > > May be someone who recently bought a system can give some tips. > > > > > > HDD will be 40Gb and 128 DDR Ram > > > > 256MB would be ideal .128 tends to be a little slower with resource > > hungry > > > apps . > > > > > Also heard that AMD generates much heat and I hence I would like to > > settle > > > > with Intel processors. > > > > thsi issue was settled ages ago.the new AMD chips run fine withoiut any > > problem. i am running an Athlon 2400+ chip without any problem > > whatsoever.
