hi,

we have written some monitoring scripts for network
connectivity. We use send 4 ping packets and check the
avilability of connectivity.

But 2/3 times, it was dicovered that it gives a false
alarm when everything is fine! Is it possible that
ping get lower priority when the network is under
heavy utilization? Is there any other way to do this
in more reliable fashion.

With the onslought of welchia kind of ping-chokers many ISPs have diabled ICMP entirely. So that is one another problem to worry about.

A decent replacement would be using a custom made connectivity program which might do something like a simple connect() to an available port like the web server ... you might find the half-syn connect() a better choice though.
