Ok try this:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] vinu]$ xinit

You should get X with no window manager and a xterm. In the xterm type
[EMAIL PROTECTED] vinu]$ echo $DISPLAY
:0.0

You should see this :0.0 and it should not be
blank. Try typing startkde in this xterm.
