I tried both ways... ie i first tried # startkde
It gave the above error.
Then I went into gnome and used the switchdesk utility to change my wm to
kde and then restarted X. Then I got the splash screen but after that it
showed the error and then reverted back to console.
First of all dont start X as root, please.
Also executing startkde or gnome-session from the console will never work. These are X clients and expect a running X server to work.
To see if your setup is working fine, 1. Run xinit. You should see X starting up and an xterm opening. 2. in the xterm execute 'startkde'
Tell us what output you get in the xterm if KDE doesnt startup.
Only if KDE starts off successfully this way should you set KDE as your default desktop manager.
