Curious. Have a HP machine here with i845 and AC97. All I have to do was run alsamixer, unmute channels and then do 'alsactl store' to save the settings.
Same with Nvidia board at home. With slackware 9.0, there is no alsa and with OSS it just works out of the box.
Can you post your modules.conf and the lspci output?
