dear all,
         this is a peculiar problem with samba but its
simple. I'll explain this not the only problem but
also occurs if u have a physically divided n/w ie if
ur crossing via a router. I believe u got it because
routers cannot forward broadcast packets, sameway even
98 machines does not have the capabililty to identify
or access smb sever so configure a winserver in
smb.conf file. u find a entry like this 
remote browe sync = 192.168.1.0 ( add all the subnets
here)
remote announce = 192.168.1.0 ( add all the subnets
here)
local master = yes
os level = 64
domain master = yes
preffered master = yes
wins support = yes

later just add the wins server's ip ( ie samba servers
ip) in all the 98 clients. and check

everything must be working fine
