The only way I can see is to save the abiword files as .doc and then have openoffice convert them. Unfortunately I have to save as .doc manually as there is no way to do it automatically. The command abiword <file> --to= does not have the option for converting to .doc files.
Convert them to .rtf - openoffice, word, abiword or any other word processor shouldn't have any problems with it.
