I know that NVIDIA makes decent drivers for their graphics cards for linux because I've been using them for the last couple of years (yes, yes,I know that those drivers are binary-only... but then, I've already sold my soul to the devil....... ;-)).
How good are ATI's Catalyst drivers for linux? Does anyone on the list have any experience with them?
I have an ATI Radeon 8500 card, and their firegl / fglrx drivers for linux (though binary) are quite good.
I'm eventually planning to buy one of these cards NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 / 5900XT ATI Radeon 9800Pro / 9800 / 9600XT
I've heard it said from hardcore gamers that the Radeon is better. But that was about two years back. I don't know what the situation is now, tomshardware or pc-gamereview might tell you a lot more.
