It's normal behavious. If the script is designed to look for a module
that it doesn't find, it'll ofcourse cry. Try building them as modules.
And for why the hardware isn't detected while the pcmcia drivers are
statically built to the kernel, I think /usr/src/linux/Documentation
should be a better answer. You, probably might be missing some boot time
options. Not sure though.
