Hi Narendra
From you i understood that you have got two problems ( if i am correct)
1. Now the RH Linux 9 is booting to the text-mode, and you wanted to change
it to KDE as a default option)?
You can try startx at the shell, ( if this one is not working try telinit
5) so it will load the x server
to change the default option you have to do some modification
login as root
goto the /etc directory, open inittab file using any editor and check the
following option
id:5:initdefault:
if the numeral is anything other than 5 it will go to the text mode by
default, so change it to 5
then restart the machine.
2. how to change to the text-mode from X
on the terminal type telinit 1 it will goto the text-mode
to return back to x type telinit 5

Subject: [LIH]Unable to start KDE
Hi
I have a Pentium III 933 with 256 MB RAM and RedHat Linux 9 installed on a
2.1 HDD.
I am using Win 2K boot loader to boot into Linux. (I have Win98 and Win2k
also installed on this machine)
Problem 1:
Till about 2 days back I could boot into Linux and get the KDE GUI working.
To go to the text mode I pressed some key combination, which I don't know.
Now the problem is as follows:
When I boot into Linux from the Win2k Boot manager, it goes thru the
booting process and comes to the login prompt (text mode) after which the
screen goes blank for a few seconds and comes back on again. This is
repeated endlessly. In between these screen blinks, I managed to login as
root and give a shutdown command, which shutdown the machine without any
further screen blanking.
What could have gone wrong and how do I recover from this problem without
re-installing Linux, so that I can get KDE back again.
Query 1:
How do I go to the text mode screen other than the terminal screen. What is
the key combination?
Could somebody help me out please.
Regards
