Hi,
Firstly, you can alter between the text and GUI mode by using the
CNTRL-ALT-F1 to CNTRL-ALT-F6 keys for the 6 console windows. To go
back to the GUI, use the ALT-F7 key.
Alternately, if you want to start in Graphical mode or text mode in the
bootup itself, you can edit the /etc/inittab file and change
id:3:initdefault:
to 5. 5 is for GUI at startup and 3 is for text mode.
Regarding your problem, if the screen goes blank and then blinks and shows
the login screen, that means that the GUI is not getting initialised. I
think the params of XF86 must have changed. Login as root and run
Xconfigurator or select the same by running setup in command prompt. U can
then detect the video card and monitor and check the syncs.
