I'll get down to you in very simple layman terms. There is nothing such, a big hurdle,
compiling the kernel, be it 2.6.x or 2.4.x. On my systems, running Debian, I've
compiled kernels many times without errors. Ofcourse, they were the Debian way using
make-kpkg. But technically make-kpkg doesn't make any difference in kernel
recompilation besides giving a .deb kernel packages at the end. So, definitely you are
wrong somewhere. Why don't you try fresh ?
Also, are you using the latest module-init-tools ?
