Well, I had similar problems when trying to make X start without the X font
server, but was unable to do so. To start X you will have to include the
path to you font server in your font path directives.

Like
FontPath "unix/:7100"

This would let x start, but it would still be using the font server.

Sad!

Sorry I did not follow the thread earlier. What is the Linux distro and
version that you are using? From version of X I am assuming RH9+ / Fedora.
Can you post the total /etc/X11/XF86Config file?
Many earlier SiS cards have problems with XFree I hope you have checked your
card is not one of them although from output it does seem to be ruled out.
If you can lay hands on a knoppix CD try and boot that and compare your
XF86Config with file generated there. Rebuild XF86Config using the
configuration utility and try using driver=vesa and see if this works.
And before making any edits keep backup copy of file so that you can try one
thing at a time and not get all muddled up.
I hope I am looking up the wrong road but I seem to recollect that fixed
font is really not the problem.
