To my knowledge there is no inbuilt checking for spellings in vi. What you can do is 
run the command:
:spell %

What this essentially means is that you are running an external command "spell 
<filename>" (% maps to the name of the file being edited currently). spell is a 
command often used in unix for spell checking. You can use your own.

You can also map this command to a command of your own choice, say SC. To do this, 
you'll need to put the following line in your .vimrc:

command SC !spell %

Now you can just run the command ":SC" and a spell check would be done.
